What is Anchor Text?

Anchor text is the visible text that appears with a hyperlink attached. This often appears blue and underlined, however you can change this on your website using HTML.

Outside anchor text can impact your site. This is because search engines will analyse external anchor text from other sites (that link to yours) as a reflection of your page and how users view it.

There are various types of anchor text:

  • Exact Match – if it includes a keyword that reflects the page that it is being linked to
  • Partial match – if it includes a variation of the keyword it is being linked to
  • Branded – a brand name
  • Generic – a generic phrase such as ‘Click Here’
  • Images – image alt attribute as the anchor text
  • Naked Link – a URL that is used as an anchor

Optimal Anchor Text

To rank high with SEO, anchor text should be clear, and relevant to the target page. To get the most out of your anchor text, ensure it is low keyword heavy and relevant to the linked page. Although you don’t have control over the anchor texts that other sites use to direct to yours, you can still use these tips to ensure that your page is descriptive.

Keep in mind that anchor text should be as accurate and concise as possible. These should also be natural phrases, rather than using the same keywords all of the time, which could suggest spam.

Anchor text shows both the user and search engine the content of the linked page, allowing you to build trust with customers, as well as build your reputation with the Search Engine, allowing you to rank higher.
